Frequently asked questions

Which tokenizer does this use?

DeepSeek's own tokenizer, published openly on the Hugging Face Hub. The current chat, V3, and R1 models share it, so one counter covers them all. It runs in your browser via transformers.js.

Why does the API bill differently for cache hits?

DeepSeek prices cached input tokens far below cache misses, but the token COUNT is the same either way. This tool gives you the count; multiply by the rate that matches your cache behavior.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Tokenization runs entirely in your browser. The only network request is downloading the open tokenizer files once from the Hugging Face CDN.

What about GPT, Claude, or Gemini counts?

The GPT column uses OpenAI's open o200k tokenizer for comparison. For exact Claude counts use our Claude Tokenizer, and for Gemini our Gemini Tokenizer.
